Media Assignment 2
Media Assignment 2
Task1: Artist presentation
The song shown in the link above is a song from Kanye west, named: ‘All day,' this music video uses more than one style which is broadcasted to us. Firstly the style that we can see is that it is in-concert shown live and debuted at the 2015 Brit awards. in front of a live audience. Throughout the video we see a large group of people with Kanye West including US rappers and UK grime artists, such as; JME, Novelist, Q-tip, Krept & Konan, Skepta, Stormzy, Allan Kingdom, Theophilus London and Vic Mensa. The entourage had a flamethrower and the crowd on the stage wore all black.
Furthermore a convention in this song is lyric interpretation which is evident in the words of the song as there are multiple references throughout.
“How many runner do you go on call? All day”
This can reference the production runners on Kanye West’s tour, production runners help out a lot on tours and it is a sign of power and wealth to have a runner, especially having multiple runners which Kanye implies and that he has them on call all day
Another reference is “ Just talked to Farrakhan, that's sensei. Told him I've been on timbs since the 10th grade, nig*a” Which is about Louis Farrakhan who is the leader of the Nation of Islam, and is an American religious movement centering on a version of Islam particular to African-American communities. Kanye West is a Christian but has a deep sensibility for the black culture, which him and Farrakhan have in common.
“You a fake Denzel like the Allstate ni*ga. If you run into me, better have Allstate with yah”
The actor, Dennis Haysbert, has a strong resemblance to Denzel Washington
The line “Better have Allstate with ya” can suggest having backup For example, “All-state” is a way to refer to a team, implying you should have a whole squad with you.
“You a Rico Suave ni*ga Ride 'round listen to Sade, nigga. If you ain't with us, you in our way, ni*ga”
Rico Suave was a hit single in 1990; the song and video depicted a tan, oiled-up Latin playboy who specialises in small-time womanising and corny dancing.
Sade is one of the R&B artists of the last thirty years .Her biggest hit, 1984s “Smooth Operator”, mocks men who think they are like Rico Suave type of people.
Kanye sees this as something negative, because it suggests that you’re trapped in the 1980s and 1990s and it suggest that you are soft like Rico Suave.
looking' at me like I'm worth both MJs. People saying, "Ye, Ye, take it easy"
Kanye refers to Michael Jackson, the king of pop, and Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player. Both MJs are worth a lot of money, and had a big impacts in their professions and Kanye, had huge impact in both music and footwear.
The lighting in this music video is dark and the clothing worn by everyone on stage is also dark, but with the bright flamethrower it gives a thrilling effect.
A technique used in the music video were camera techniques: as there are different shots angles and movements as we see close ups of the performer, medium range shots showing the group of people dancing on stage and the person with the flamethrower among them and long shots showing the audience and the people on stage.
Close Up of Kanye West performing live at the Brit Awards
Medium Range shot, with a
low angle, showing the group of people on stage and the performer
Long shot showing part of the audience, the group on stage, and the performer, also the angle of the shot is high.
The next song that I choose was “All Falls down”
The style of this song is a narrative as it tells us a story. Kanye sampled Lauryn Hill's "The Mysteries of Iniquity" as the hook for this song and the video is filmed at an International Airport in California. The video follows Kanye accompanying his girlfriend to the airport to catch her flight. The technique of multiple camera angles, are used, but the majority of the time it is in a first person perspective showing the journey from their car to the airport terminal from Kanye West' eyes.
A technique used are special effects as during the video we see Kanye and his 'girlfriend' running through the airport in slow motion.
Kanye west then speaks about himself and he shows that he it trying to compensate for what he is missing in his life which is acceptance. In his line,” We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us. We trying to buy back our 40 acres. And for that paper, look how low we a’stoop. Even if you in a Benz, you still a ni*ga in a coupe” he shows he cares about what the rich upper-class thinks about him, so he looking for acceptance by buying the things, cars ,property and other material things. Another way he shows he is trying to compensate for something missing is acceptance of his peers or the African American community in general. This shown by the lyrics, “Then I spent 400 bucks on this. Just to be like ni*ga you ain’t up on this! And I can’t even go to the grocery store. Without some ones that’s clean and a shirt with a team”. Here, Kanye is trying to be accepted in his own community by being seen in a grocery store, which isn’t normally a place you would get dressed up for. Also, spending $400.00 on a single item shows that he wants to impress the people around him, maybe because he was once in that same position of having little to nothing, and he just wants to show off to compensate for what he never had.

The third song i choose from Kanye West is "Heartless" it was produced in 2008 and the music video from this song is animated, it can be said that another style of this song is pastiche and homage as it pays a tribute to Ralph Bakshi's 1981 film 'American Pop'. The video uses rotoscoped animation, in which actual people were filmed and the visual effects studio drew over every movement, and references various scenes and backgrounds from the film. The video portrays Kanye West traveling through the city alone at during the night, with scenes of different women shown though out the video, as well as this parts of the video takes place in Kanye West's apartment and there are portraits of "The Jetsons" which is a famous american, animated sitcom.
